One
of the big issues for Westie breeders is the difficulty of
letting their pups go. Even the crustiest of us has a big soft
spot in his or her heart and we all want to know that our pups
are cherished as only a Westie can appreciate and take advantage
of.
There are several positive
signs that the adoptive owners are appropriately mushy-hearted
and enamoured of their new Pup…
-
Once
on the waiting list, they phone or email, and talk about or send
photos of the new fence in the back yard, or the cute cushions
that were hand-made especially for Pup when she finally comes
home.
- Coming to pick up Pup
was a major family outing and there were no empty seats in
the car – poor Pup will just have to ride home on a
lap and not in the crate as the crate is in the back. This
happens even with mini-vans. All the back seats are full,
if not with kids, then in-laws or friends.
- They phoned you several
times within the first few weeks of having Pup home, not
just to ask questions but to tell you about all the cute
things that Pup did once they brought him or her home. Like
chewing new Dad’s best golf shoe. Or making a nest
in Dad’s desk, among the pile of old building plans
that are Dad’s business.
- The adoptive owners
send you photos every few weeks showing Pup doing something
totally fascinating but Puppy is such a blur that anyone
not totally blinded by love would see that it is a nothing
photo…
- The adoptive owners
call to ask if it ok to let Pup sleep in the bedroom even
though they have read in several sources that it isn’t.
- Pup has her own favourite
seat in the car – and it is on someone’s lap.
- They take Pup with
them to Starbucks or Tim Horton’s every morning.
- They take Pup with
them to family gatherings and all the aunties, uncles, grandmas
and fathers-in-law love Pup, too. (Kids always love Pup,
don’t count that!)
- They ask for another
pup, because one Westie just isn’t enough!
Remember – Westie
pups deserve only the best, and it is a breeder’s job
to be sure our pups get only the absolute crème de la
crème.
