Can I apply to adopt a Rescue Westie if I have young children?

Due to the fact that many Rescue Westies have a questionable history, applications will not normally be approved if your family has children under the age of 8. As well, a family who may have very young grandchildren who visit often may also fall into this category.

Do I have to have a fenced yard to be approved to adopt or foster a rescue Westie?
Although a fully fenced yard would be ideal, it is not considered mandatory for adoption. However, no applications will be approved if a home indicates that they have or intend to use, an electric underground fence. If such fence exists, it must be removed prior to the application being formally approved.

Do you have to meet everyone in the family before an application is approved?
When having a home visit, all members of the potential adoptive family must be present, as well as any existing pets. It is recommended that when a Rescue Rep does a home visit, that they do so with either one of their own Westies, or else the particular dog that is being considered for placement. This will allow you to see how a Westie would feel in your home.

Do we have to take a rescue Westie to obedience classes?
Obedience training will not be completed while the Westie is in initial foster care. If required, obedience training will be undertaken by the adoptive home at their own expense.

Is there an adoption donation required? How much is it?
Yes, CWHWTC Rescue requests that an Adoption Donation be paid to help offset the costs associated with doing Rescue. The Adoption Donation will be the same for all Westies, regardless of age or situation. The amount requested for an Adoption Donation will be $400.00.

When are we requested to pay an adoption donation?
Adoption donations will be payable at the beginning of the Foster to Adopt period. The money will be deposited into our Rescue bank account, and accounted for in a separate sub account until such time as the adoption is made final. At any point during the Foster to Adopt period, prior to the adoption being finalized, if the dog is returned to rescue, this donation may be returned at the individual’s request. No donations will be refunded after the adoption is finalized.

Are the adoption donations ever waived?
In the event of the adoption of a high maintenance dog which will require extensive or lifelong medications or treatments, consideration will be given to waiving the adoption fee.

What happens after I submit an application to adopt a rescue Westie?
When you submit an application to Adopt a Rescue Westie, the following steps will be taken:
- your application for adoption is received and reviewed
- an interview and home check are done to confirm suitability
- a home visit form will be completed and placed on file.
When and if a Rescue Westie comes along that would be suited to your home and family, we will contact you to start the Foster to Adopt process.

How do you select the adoptive homes for a rescue Westie?
After the Westie has been evaluated by the Foster Care home and the Foster Care report has been completed, all applications will be reviewed to determine which home would be the most suitable for that particular Westie. Adoptive homes will be determined by their suitability for a particular Westie and not by the date their application was received.

Do I have to foster a rescue Westie before I can adopt one?
Potential Adoptive homes must complete a minimum of three months of Foster Care with the Westie prior to the adoption being finalized. During this time, they will be visited by a volunteer/representative and contact maintained via visit, phone or e-mail to ensure that this is a good match for all concerned. The length and frequency of these contacts and/or visits will be at the discretion of the volunteer/representative but should not be less than once per month and may be pre-arranged or unannounced drop-ins as they deem necessary.

If I foster a rescue Westie and things don’t work out as expected, what happens?
If for any reason, you or the Rescue volunteer/representative feel that the placement is not as smooth as expected, or that it is not a suitable environment for the particular Westie, the foster period will be extended in order to correct any deficiencies or the Westie will be moved to a more compatible home. Since every Westie is an individual, no Adoptive home will be penalized because one placement was unsuccessful. However, if a subsequent adoption attempt is also unsuccessful, the application must be re-evaluated and another home check performed to determine if this home is indeed suitable for a Rescue Westie.

If I have to give up my Westie to Rescue, will it be euthanized?
No Westie in our care will be euthanized if care or treatment can be provided which will allow it to have a decent quality of life. This care can include, but is not limited to, such things as: specialized diets, medication, surgery, and treatments such as physiotherapy, chiropractic and acupuncture. Euthanasia for medical reasons will only be considered if a Westie is suffering needlessly and no amount of treatment will allow the Westie to have a decent quality of life. In this case, the written opinions of two Veterinarians clearly recommending euthanasia of the Westie will be required.

What kinds of things do you do when you get a Westie into Rescue?
All Westies taken into Rescue will be fostered prior to adoption. During this foster period, they will be:
  • Vet checked
  • Immunized/titre tested if necessary
  • Assessed for health and temperament
  • Medically/surgically treated if necessary
  • Spayed/neutered
  • Microchipped
  • Groomed

Will you take any Westie into the Rescue program?
All Westies that look to be pure bred will be accepted into Rescue, regardless of their origin or registration status. Obvious mixes will not be taken into Westie Rescue, however the Rescue Committee will make every attempt to ensure that these animals are taken care of by all-breed rescue organizations.

No Westie will be turned away because of it’s problems, or because it will be expensive to fix it up sufficiently to ensure that it can have a decent quality of life. These problems include, but are not exclusive to; temperament, health, training, abuse or neglect.

Will a Rescue Westie that I am Fostering need to go to a vet? Who pays?
All necessary Veterinary procedures will be completed while in Foster Care. This will include any treatment for health problems, necessary surgery, etc. If required, teeth will be cleaned. The Club Rescue will reimburse Foster Care Givers for all necessary veterinary expenses including the cost of implanting a microchip if required. The following procedures are required and are automatically approved for reimbursement:
a. Initial vet check to evaluate general health and indicate any obvious or potential health problems
b. Titre testing or vaccination as required
c. Microchip insertion if required.

Any other veterinary expenses must be pre-approved by the Committee members designated responsible for Foster Care expenses. If there are any doubts of the necessity of any procedure, the entire Committee will be consulted prior to proceeding.

How do I get approval for extra veterinary care for the Rescue Westie I am Fostering?
Foster Care homes will be required to obtain written reports from their Veterinarian which details required procedures and estimated cost to perform each one.

How do I get reimbursed for approved expenses when Fostering a Rescue Westie?
All approved Foster Care expenses will be reimbursed using Claim form with original receipts attached.

As a Foster Care Giver to a Rescue Westie, what will I be responsible for?
The Foster Care Giver will be responsible for providing normal care, including food, treats, grooming etc. The Foster Care Giver may be reimbursed for normal care items only if special and overly expensive items had to be purchased (ie special diets or shampoos).

What kind of Westies can I expect to adopt?
It is impossible to say for sure what the Westie looking for a new home will be like. Remember, these are Westies that have been given up by their owners for one reason or another. Some Westies may be young, others older. Although we can expect to get a few Westies that are given up because of their owners' problems, most have some kind of problem of their own, otherwise why would their owners give them up? Some may have a health issue, others may have a behavioural issue.

All Westies with health issues will be evaluated and treated prior to being available for adoption. We may not be able to correct the health problem. However we will have the Westie stabilized and on the correct medications if necessary, which will ensure that the Westie is able to have a good quality of life. If it is a behavioural issue, the Westie will be evaluated and these issues identified and addressed prior to being available for adoption.

That is why it is important to fill in the Application fully and honestly. Finding the Westie that would be a perfect addition to your home and family will depend on your own situation and experience.

Are Westies checked for health before they are adopted?
Yes, all Westies are given a health check while in Foster Care, while they are being evaluated, and any health issues will be addressed and treated. If possible, we will obtain their former medical records from the former owners in order to obtain a full medical history.

When I adopt a Westie, how will I know it is really mine? Will I get the Registration papers?
When the adoption of a Rescue Westie is finalized, you will receive an Adoption Certificate. The Canadian West Highland White Terrier Club shall retain applicable registrations papers, and title to all Westies that are taken into Rescue, and we will have an enduring interest in the Health and Welfare of all Adopted Rescues. Should anyone with an Adopted Rescue Westie wish to participate in any CKC events such as Obedience, Agility or Rally-O, it is possible to do so by obtaining a Performance Event Number (PEN).
