Foster Home

Before rescued Westies are adopted, they spend some time in a foster home. You will find below some information on their role and what happens to the Westie during that time.

Initial Care

All Westies taken into Rescue will be fostered prior to adoption. During this foster period, they will be:

  • vet checked
  • immunized/titre tested if necessary
  • assessed for health and temperament
  • medically/surgically treated if necessary
  • spayed/neutered
  • microchipped
  • groomed

Foster Care

All necessary Veterinary procedures will be completed while in Foster Care. This will include any treatment for health problems, necessary surgery, etc. If required, teeth will be cleaned. The Club Rescue will reimburse Foster Care Givers for all necessary veterinary expenses including the cost of implanting a microchip if required.

The following procedures are required and are automatically approved for reimbursement:

  • Initial vet check to evaluate general health and indicate any obvious or potential health problems
  • Titre testing or vaccination as required
  • Microchip insertion if required.

Any other veterinary expenses must be pre-approved by the Committee members designated responsible for Foster Care expenses. If there are any doubts of the necessity of any procedure, the entire Committee will be consulted prior to proceeding.

Foster Care homes will be required to obtain written reports from their Veterinarian which details required procedures and estimated cost to perform each one. All approved Foster Care expenses will be reimbursed using Claim form with original receipts attached.

The Foster Care Giver will be responsible for providing normal care, including food, treats, grooming, etc. The Foster Care Giver may be reimbursed for normal care items only if special and overly expensive items had to be purchased (ie special diets or shampoos).

In selecting a Foster Care home, consideration should be given to their experience with Westie related problems (health and/or behaviour) and their suitability in evaluating a particular Westie.
