In September 1988, I was expecting a litter by Eng. Can. Am. Ch. Whitebriar Jeronimo, which I hoped would provide me with a replacement for the dam, Ashgate Skeabost, who was to have her 3rd and last litter. The litter of 5 (3m, 2f) arrived on Sept.6 and all went well. At 6 weeks, it became evident I had a favourite and it was not one of the girls. At 9 weeks, my mind was made up: I had to keep the boy, Windacre Man For All Seasons, Brute.

I took him to his first show at 6 months along with my older special, Tanker (Ch.Windacre Maximus Macsen) as one of the judges had given the older one a group placement previously. Brute took WD and I got a friend (non-doggy) to show him and I took the special. After we had gone around and the judge looked at Brute again, my friend came and stood in front of me. I quietly told her she should be behind me. Her answer was "the judge told me to go in front." Thus began a career I could never imagine.

In 1989, Brute was the top Westie puppy in Canada and the top terrier pup in BC, winning 3 BPIS, 26 BPIGs and several group placements. He went to Montgomery with David Gignac and at Hatboro was WD for a 5 point major at 13 months and was RWD at Montgomery.

In 1990, he was #2 Westie in Canada, missing #1 by 14 points, #1 CWHWTC Westie, and #7 terrier. At 2 years of age, it was time to slow down and relax for a while.

At this time, I became friends with Veli-Pekka Kumpumaki (Perhaps Kennel) in Finland. After much pressuring, I allowed Brute to take a European holiday. Pekka did a wonderful job with Brute, who got to sleep in Pekka's mother's bed and he received 3 more titles.

This is a picture of Brute and breeder/owner Linda Carmichael taken just before he went to Europe. It was taken by reporter Yvonne Lord, and appeared with an article about him in the Merritt News.

While Brute's show career was auspicious, he also made his mark in the breeding department. He produced champion offspring in 6 different countries and has been the foundation for my breeding programme. My last litter from Brute was born in April 2002, when he was almost 14.

For the last 10 years, Brute has been my constant companion and requires a piece of my clothing be left on the floor to ensure a good night's sleep. At 14 ½, he is not as spry as he was, but he still patrols for girls in season and makes sure the couch is well held down.
